William was born in 1814.

Birth

He was baptised on the 25th December 1814, his parents were given as John Francis (blacksmith) and Jane Francis (nee Ashby). His parents baptised him four days after burying his sister Harriet on the 21st December 1814.

According to the 1851 census William's mother was called Jane (71) and was also born in Nuffield.

Marriage

William Francis married Sarah Randall on the 3rd July 1836 in Reading, Berkshire.

On the night of the 6th June 1841 William Francis is living with his wife Sarah at Gangsdown Hill, Nuffield, Oxfordshire, along with their sons Henry (3), John (2) and William (5 months). Two doors away lives an older John Francis (54), also a blacksmith, and his wife Jane (56) (presumably his parents).

On the night of 30 March 1851 William is still living with his family at Gangsdown Hill, Nuffield, including his wife Sarah 7 children, and her mother-in-law Jane who is now a 71 and a widow.

On the night of 7 April 1861 he was living with his wife Sarah and 10 children at Nuffield Common. The properties either side of this one in the census were Huntercombe Farm, and Gangsdown Hill.

On the night of 2 April 1871 William was still living with his wife Sarah at Nuffield Common, next to the Crown Inn.

By 1881 William was a widower, living at Gangsdown Hill & Grocery Shop, Nuffield. He was 66 and a blacksmith & iron founder, employing 7 men.

Death

William Francis died on the 1st October 1888 at the age of 73, and was buried in Nuffield on the 4th October 1888.

His probate was proved on the 30th November 1888:
