Mary Jane Engleheart
Born: 1813 | Died: 31 Jan 1873 | Married: Pelham Richardson | Mother: Mary Jane Curteis | Father: Nathaniel Engleheart | Descendant: Ernest M. Richardson |
Census | 1841 | 1851 | 1861 | 1871 | 1881 | 1891 | 1901 | 1911 | 1921 |
Mary Jane Engleheart was the daughter of Nathaniel Brown Engleheart and Mary Jane Curteis.
She was the mother of Ernest Murray Richardson.
Birth
Mary Jane Engleheart was baptised on the 25th December 1813 (Christmas day!) in the parish of Bedfont, Middlesex.
Her parents are Nathaniel Brown Engleheart a proctor of Doctors' Commons London and a Mary Jane. Interestingly the curate's name is also Curteis, but I don't know if the initial is J or T. It looks similar to one of the witnesses in Nathaniel's weddding.
We know this is the right Mary Jane Engleheart because the 1861 census of Mary Jane Richardson lists a sister Georgiana C. Engleheart, and there is also a christening record for a Georgiana with these parents. Also there is a record of a Mary Jane Richardson being the executrix for Nathaniel Brown Engleheart.
Marriage
Mary Jane Engleheart married Pelham Richardson on the 2nd June 1832 at Saint Luke, Old Charlton, Kent, England.
This is likely to be our Mary Jane, as our Mary Jane had a son called Pelham.
Children
Mary had the following children with Pelham Richardson:
- Mary J. Richardson, born in Kennington in Surrey in around 1837
- Pelham Engleheart Richardson, born in Lewisham, Kent in around 1844 [Registered: 1844 Oct-Nov-Dec, Lewisham, vol.5 page 290]
- Edith S. Richardson born in Lewisham, Kent in around 1848
- Ernest Murray Richardson, born in Blackheath in around 1848-49
Life
In 1841 she was living at Dartmouth grove, Blackheath, Kent with her husband Pelham (a bookseller), and her daughter Mary (4) along with 5 other young Engleheart girls (perhaps her sisters).
In 1851 when she was 37 she was at Dartmouth Row, Blackheath, Kent, still living with her husband Pelham who is now a bookseller and publisher (and employer of 3 men and a boy). Her children Pelham Engleheart Richardson (6), Edith (3) and Ernest Murray Richardson (2) are with her. They had three servants, a nurse, a cook, and a maid.
On the 26th December 1860 her husband Pelham died at their house in Morden Road, Kidbrooke, at Blackheath park. He was a bookseller and East India Agent. On the 25th May 1861 the probate was granted, with Mary being the sole executrix.
In 1861 Mary is 47 and a widow (and fund holder), and living at 1 Morden Road, Kidbrooke. Her daughter Mary (still unmarried) has come back to live with her, as are her other children Pelham (now a clerk for the East India company) and Ernest who is now 12. The nurse is still there, but the other two servants have changed. Her sister Georgiana C. Engleheart (still unmarried) is visiting (she was born in Charlton, in Kent, unlike Mary who was born in London, Middlesex). Charlton is only 2 miles from where they are currently living in Blackheath.
In 1869 her father Nathaniel Engleheart died, and Mary Jane Richardson was named the executor by probate.
In 1871 Mary is 57 and an annuitant, now living a few doors down at 8 Morden Road (assuming they didn't renumber the houses). Her children Mary (34) and Ernest (22) are still at home, still unmarried, and still unemployed.
Death
Mary died on the 31st January 1873 at 8 Morden Road, Blackheath Park.
The probate record of Mary Jane Richardson on the 24th February 1873, she had effects of under £9,000.
Her executors were Eliza Anne Engleheart of Stayer House Eye in the County of Suffolk Spinster and Frederick Wickings Smith of 63 Lincoln's-Inn-fields in the County of Middlesex Gentleman.
