In [[Watson Census|1871]] he was living with his mother and two brothers, Frederick and Alfred at 156 Eldon Street, Westoe, Durham. His father was a seagoing fireman, so was probably away at sea for the 1871 census.  In 1881 they are still at the same address, but his father has returned. Charles and his brother Frederick are now working as butchers.
