Birth

John Box was born in Brighton around 1827.

He was christened in Brighton on the 11th November 1827, his parents were John Box (a Fly Driver) and Lucy Box (née Card). They lived at Super Street in Brighton.

On the night of 6 June 1841 John Box was living with his parents John and Lucy Box at Cheltenham Place, Brighton.

Marriage

John Box married Mary Ann Carey on the 30th May 1846 at Saint Nicolas, Brighton, Sussex. They were both 19 years old and living at 20 Oxford Street. His profession was a Fly Proprietor.

His father was given as John Box (Fly Proprietor), her father was Jesse Carey (deceased), also a Fly Proprietor.

The witnesses were William Shelley and Jane Samphion(?)

  • John Thomas Box (1849) BMD:B: Q2 1849, Brighton Vol. 7, pp. 325. MMN:Carey, baptised 22nd October 1851 at Chapel Royal, Brighton, Sussex. Married Ester Ann Baker on 29th April 1872.
  • Sarah Jane Box (1851), BMD:B: Q3 1851, Brighton, Vol.7, pp. 314, MMN:Carey, baptised 22nd October 1851 at Chapel Royal, Brighton, Sussex.

On the night of 30 March 1851 he was living with his family at 35 Cheltenham Place, Brighton. His profession was a "Flyman" - a carriage driver, like his late father-in-law. He was listed as a Flyman in the baptisms of his children as well.

On the night of 7th April 1861 he was living with his family at 2 Albion Place, Brighton, his profession is now cab driver (which sounds similar).

On the night of the 2rd April 1871, they are living at 4½ Oxford Street, Brighton. Their children have all now left home and it is just John and Mary at home.

On 29th April 1872 his son John Thomas Box was married at St Nicolas' Church, Brighton. His son was living at St Luke's in Chelsea at the time. John Box appeared to still be alive (he wasn't listed as deceased) and his profession was still flyman.

On the 1st July 1872 his wife Mary died of cancer of the womb, which she had been suffering from for 2½ years. She was only 43. They were living at 18 Hanover Street, Brighton. He registered her death the next day, when his profession was listed as a Cab Driver.

On the night of the 3rd April 1881, one John Box is at 9 Queens Road, Brighton, his occupation is now hotel keeper, but there is no other family with him. Staying there is an assistant (Augusta Edmonds) and a visitor (Selina Leon from Paris). I think this is unlikely to be the right John Box though.
