Birth

Janet Hunter was born on 26th July 1812 in Torryburn, Fife, Scotland to John Hunter and Helen Anderson.

First Marriage

Janet Hunter married a John Paterson in Torryburn on the 22 May 1835.

Children

Janet Hunter and John Paterson had the following children together:

  • Peter Paterson born on the 23rd October 1836 in Torryburn
  • Helen Paterson born on the 20th October 1937, christened on 29rd October 1837 in Torryburn (says mother Helen Hunter - typo)
  • Mary Paterson born on the 16th June 1839, christened on 23rd June 1839 in Torryburn
  • John Paterson born on the 17th August 1841, christened on 29th August 1841 in Torryburn.
  • Peter Paterson born on the 1st November 1844, christened 10th November 1844 in Torryburn

In the 1841 census this Janet Paterson and her family - Hellen (4) and Mary (2) are living in Torry & New Mills. John Paterson's occupation is given a a cotton worker.

He died of cholera in 1849, along with a great many others in the area. Cholera had first reached Britain from India in 1831. The next cholera epidemic hit Britain in 1848, and lasted two years, claiming over 52,000 lives. In Torryburn they were burying as many as four people per day killed by cholera. 

 Dec 2 (1849)  John Paterson aged 37 was buried (at Torryburn), died of Cholera.

Also in the same week, from the same family: 

Nov 28th (1849) Jean Paterson aged 35 years was buried (at Torryburn), died of Cholera

Nov 28th (1849) Mary Paterson aged 31 years was buried (at Torryburn), died of Cholera


This is certainly the correct Janet Hunter as in the later 1851 census her children Helen (13), Mary (11), and John (9) are living with her, as is her new husband David Balfour whom she married on the 8th February 1851 at Torryburn. The children are listed as David's stepchildren. Neither of the children named Peter Paterson are listed, possibly indicating that they died in infancy.

Janet Hunter married David Balfour on the 8th February 1851 at Torryburn.

Death

Janet Hunter was buried on the 27th April 1852 according to the Torryburn parish registers (which list only her name as Janet Hunter rather than Janet Balfour, it was common to use the maiden name for burials,her age is left blank).

It is possible Janet died due to complications from childbirth, being buried so soon after her daughter Janet was born. Her husband, David Balfour went on to marry Ann Harrower (nee Nicol) on the 22nd May 1868.

Other References

A different Janet Hunter was born on the 30th April 1821 in Torryburn, Fife, Scotland to John Hunter and Helen Cochrane, but the 1851 census for Torryburn states that our Janet Balfour is 38 years old, which would make her birth year around 1813, which indicates that Helen Anderson is her mother, not Helen Cochrane.

This other Janet Hunter (married to Andrew Balfour, Father John Hunter, weaver) died in 1863.
