James Carlton (alias Carrington) is so far just notable for producing William Carrington in Holkham. Oh and for having an alias!

He married Martha Oliver on 21st January 1789 in Little Walsingham.

More as we find it...

Birth

His birth date is unknown, but according to the age on his headstone he would have been born around 1760.

Possible matches:

  • Great Cressingham, Norfolk: James son of William and Frances Carlton was baptised November 14th, 1762.
  • Great Walsingham, Norfolk: James Shorting, son of Thomas and Anne Carrington, 7th May 1762.
  • Great Fransham, Norfolk: James Carlton, base born son of Ellin Carlton & Jonathan Smith, b. 1st Nov 1760, bap. 30 Nov 1760

The last one is in Norfolk, but 24 miles South of Holkham, but matches the age on his gravestone.

Norfolk Chronicle - 12 August 1786 : "James Carleton, otherwise Carrington, for an unnatural crime, returned ignoramus - discharged."

An unnatural crime usually referred to a homosexual act, and the threat of being accused of an unnatural act was sometimes used to blackmail people. The punishment could be transportation or death. I believe "returned ignoramus" is a legal term for there was not enough evidence to continue with the charges.

Marriage

James Carlton married Martha Oliver on the 21st January 1789 in Little Walsingham. Both were unmarried and of this parish. The witnesses were Thomas Martin Dennes/Downes and John Creed (who witnessed many weddings).

Children

They had at seven children, one of whom was William Carrington

Death

James Carrington's wife Martha died in 1826, but James died 13 years later on the 26th May 1839, aged 79 years.

They were buried together in the churchyard of St Withburga, Holkham Hall, in plot 73. Sandstone oval: "In memory of James Carrington who died 26 May 1839 aged 79 years. Also Martha, wife of James Carrington who died 21st January 1826 aged 64 years"
