Charles John Watson was the son of Charles Watson and Jane Johnson and was born on the 27th December 1864 at Thrift Street, South Shields, Durham, England.

In 1871 he was living with his mother and two brothers, Frederick and Alfred at 165 Eldon Street, Westoe, Durham. His father was a seagoing fireman, so was probably away at sea for the 1871 census. In 1881 they have moved to 156 Eldon Street, the same road, but a different address. For this census his father is at home (previously I assume he was at sea). Charles and his brother Frederick are now working as butchers.

In 1891 his parents are still at Eldon street, but both Charles and Frederick have left. Charles has moved to 20 Chichester Road, in Westoe where he was living with his wife Mary Ann Stewart Dunn and their first child Robert Norman Watson.

They had three children:

  • Robert Norman Watson (born 14 January 1891)
  • Florence Watson (~1893)
  • Harley Watson (5 Jul 1895-1965, Bank Cashier)

In 1901 Charles, and his wife Mary A. turn up at 14 Belle Vue Crescent, South Shields, Durham, where they are living with all three of their children. Charles is still a butcher, but is now listed as employing people as well.

In 1911 he had moved to 10 Talbot Road, Tyne Dock, South Shields, where he was living with his wife Mary and their four children Robert Watson, Robert, Florence, Harley and Jane. He is 46 years old, and still employing people as a butcher.

In 1891 they are living together at 20 Chichester Road, Westoe, Durham with their two month old son Robert Watson.

In the Shields Daily Gazette of the 22nd March 1900, There is an advert for an auction of property, where Lot 1. consisted of Nos 541, 543, 547 and 549 Stanhope Road, corner of Earsdon Terrace, Tyne Dock. One of these shops was "Double-Fronted, and in the occupation off Mrs M. Arnold, Boot and Shoe Dealer, and the other in the occupation of Mr Charles Watson, Butcher". We know from later directories that this was 543 Stanhope Road.

In 1901 Charles and his wife Mary turn up at 14 Belle Vue Crescent, South Shields, Durham, where they are living with all three of their children. Charles is still a butcher, but is now listed as employing people as well.

The 1914 Kelly's directory of Durham, lists a Charles Watson as a butcher at 543 Stanhope road, Tyne Dock. This is 7 minutes' walk from 10 Talbot Road, and is on the same road that he died on many years later.

Death

Charles' wife, Mary Ann Watson, died on the 4th March 1927 at 10, Talbot Road, South Shields. She was buried on the 7th March 1927 at Harton Cemetery.

The death of a Charles J. Watson was registered in Q2 1935 at South Shields (Vol. 10a, p823), he was 70 years old. This would put his birth around 1860, which doesn't match up very well to our Charles John Watson, who was born in 1864, but does match the probate record above.
