Birth

Marriage

Jesse Carey married Sarah Knight in 1824 at St Nicolas', Brighton, Sussex.

Children

On the night of 6 June 1841 Jesse and his family were at Oxford Street, Brighton. His occupation was listed as flyman. This could refer to someone who works backstage in a theatre, but it is more likely to be someone who drives a fly (a type of fast horse-drawn carriage).

Brighton Gazette - 6th July 1871:

On Saturday the workmen employed by Messrs. G. Lynn and Son, builders, had their "day out," through the liberality of their employers. The rendezvous was Uckfield. The employés left in flys, supplied by Mr Jesse Carey, of Marlborough Street who gave great satisfaction; a portion of Messrs. Lynn's workmen also went by train, and a number also from East Grinstead, where Messr. :Lynn are carrying on extensive building operations. Altogether considerably upwards of 100 assembled. On arriving at Uckfield a good breakfast was provided afterwards a game of cricket was played; the party perambulated the beautiful grounds of Buxted Park, and enjoyed themselves in carious ways, returning to Brighton shortly before twelves o'clock, having thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

It is unclear if the above news story refers to our Jesse Carey, or possibly his son (also called Jesse Carey), or maybe another with the same name.
