Birth

According to the 1841 census Jesse was born around 1800, in Sussex.

Marriage

Jesse Carey married Sarah Knight in 1824 at St Nicolas', Brighton, Sussex.

Children

On the night of 6 June 1841 Jesse and his family were at Oxford Street, Brighton. His occupation was listed as flyman. This could refer to someone who works backstage in a theatre, but it is more likely to be someone who drives a fly (a type of fast horse-drawn carriage).

Death

Jesse Carey was buried on the 15th July 1843 at Brighthelmston (Brighton), Sussex, England. He was only 43 years old.

Sarah Carey was a widow by the 1851 census, which confirms that Jesse must have died between 1841 and 1851.

Other Records

  • A Jesse Carey was baptised 25th March 1832, to a Jesse Carey and Jane (not a Sarah, although it is likely our Sarah is actually called Sarah Jane).

Brighton Gazette - 6th July 1871:

On Saturday the workmen employed by Messrs. G. Lynn and Son, builders, had their "day out," through the liberality of their employers. The rendezvous was Uckfield. The employés left in flys, supplied by Mr Jesse Carey, of Marlborough Street who gave great satisfaction; a portion of Messrs. Lynn's workmen also went by train, and a number also from East Grinstead, where Messr. :Lynn are carrying on extensive building operations. Altogether considerably upwards of 100 assembled. On arriving at Uckfield a good breakfast was provided afterwards a game of cricket was played; the party perambulated the beautiful grounds of Buxted Park, and enjoyed themselves in carious ways, returning to Brighton shortly before twelves o'clock, having thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

The above news story cannot be about our Jesse Carey (despite him being a flyman) as Sarah was a widow by 1851, so this is possibly referring to his son (also called Jesse Carey), or maybe another with the same name.
