1911 - Kensington Place
On the night of 2 April 1911, Phoebe Carrington (nee Smith) is living at 15 Kensington Place or Row (it was listed as both), Queens Road, Lakenham. We know it is Phoebe, despite it only saying Mrs Carrington, as she has signed the census declaration as Mrs P. Carrington, and her daughter Gertrude is still living with her.
The house has 4 rooms (including any kitchen, but not any bathrooms).
Phoebe is listed as having had 9 children, 2 of whom have subsequently died, and she lists how long her marriage a having lasted as 46 years (whether that includes years since her husband died is not clear). For Gertrude she had 3 children, 1 of whom has died, and her marriage is 3 years.

The census comments that Phoebe has only one child born (Hilda).

Ellen Carrington | Wife | M | 45 | - | Blackburn, Lancashire |
Well we can see from the above where James probably was in 1891, ie in Blackburn, although we will need the census for the whole country for 1891 to prove this.

James' father Henry has obviously died since 1891, and all the children appear to have left apart from Gertrude. But wait, who else is living in this street:

Now Henry Carrington was married in 1891 in Norwich, Norfolk, to Emma Bunting. And if that wasn't enough, who lives next to Henry?

Now, Frederick, and Eliza were witnesses at James' wedding in 1909, and Eliza was a witness with Phoebe on the amendments to James' birth certificate. She is also suspiciously the right age to be... dum, dum, Daaa! ...
Eliza Carrington, James' (and Henry's) sister. Note also that Fundenhall and Forncett are next to each other (south west of Norwich), which must mean something, but I'm not sure what yet...

Finally we have tracked down James Carrington living with his parents, but who are his grandparents? To find this out we have to go back 30 years to the 1851 census of Litcham (named as his birthplace).

In 1871 Mary Carrington was a patient at the Infirmary Road Borough Asylum, St Clement, Norwich. She was 65, born in Wells, Norfolk, and the wife of a gardener. Her condition was listed as lunatic (which probably covered a wide range of conditions including dementia). There was also a William Carrington, but he was 22, an unmarried Tailor.
1861 - Trory St, Lakenham, Norwich
The address of the house two entries before in the census was given as 35 Trory Street, and all the houses below were labelled as ditto, but I think this just referred to the street, not the number.
Trory Street no longer exists (it was south of the old Victoria Railway Station), but it used to come off Grove Road, which still exists.

John Carrington | Son | - | 4 | At Home | Litcham, Norfolk |
Frederick Carrington | Son | - | 2 | At Home | Litcham, Norfolk |
Success! But 12 seems a bit young for an eldest child (Mary would have been 33), so a long search (note the misspelled birth place) turns up:
1851 - Lexham Road, Litcham Mitford, Norfolk (PRO HO/107/1825 Folio: 335 Page: 44) | |||||

Ellen Stanford | Head | U | 53 | Independant | Massingham, Norfolk |
Charlotte Stanford | Niece | U | 11 | Independant | Tittleshall, Norfolk |
Eliza Carrington | Servant | U | 17 | House Servant | Wroyham, Norfolk |
So we now have an elder daughter (no signs of any others yet) which would make Mary 28 at the birth of her first child - still a bit late, but not quite so unlikely).
1841 - Wroxham, Norfolk
Now we're doing so well, lets try 1841 (note the 1841 census ages for adults are rounded to 5 years.):
Here we have a household at Wroxham field with Mary Carrrington as the head. And next in the census is William Carrington alone at Wroxham Hall. It looks like he was away for the census. but they slipped him in close to his family.
Ok, so on to Wroxham in 1841, where William's family has moved to (note that these two entries are adjacent in the Census):

William Carrington | - | - | 35 | Gardener J. | - |
Bizarrely amoungst the children we have two Elizabeths, and a Mary and a Maria. Can this be the same family? The only possible match in the
children is the second Elizabeth (give or take a year). Where did all the other children go (especially Mary the youngster). Also why is their son William (who should be 1 or 2 at this time) not listed?
Also in 1841 we have an Ellen Carrington listed in Holkham (I've only an incomplete transcription of this one):

I'm not yet sure who Ellen is (William's family had moved to Wroxham by then), perhaps she was one of John Carrington's children, as the 1841 census shows he too is living in Holkham
