1851 - 4 Plough Alley, Wapping - Joseph Gordon
On the night of 30 March 1851 here are Joseph Gordon and his wife Mary. The only problem is that the ages don't match with the Joseph and Mary Gordon that appear with Samuel in 1861...

Name | Relation | Status | Age | Profession | Birth Place |
Joseph Gordon | Head | Married | 42 | Labourer | Wapping, Middlesex |
Mary Gordon | Wife | Married | 41 | St George, Middlesex | |
Thomas King | Visitor | 14 | Errand Boy | Wapping, Middlesex |
Each of the numbered addresses at Plough Alley has many families in them, so were probably some kind of apartment buildings.
For some reason their first daughter Mary Gordon (who would be aged 2) isn't at the house.
A few doors down at 9 Plough alley is another Gordon family, this time Robert Gordon (28) from Newfoundland and his wife Mary, their children Henry (6) and James (4) and a lodger John Gordon (18) all from Jersy.
1861 - 11 Plough Alley, Wapping - Joseph Gordon
On the night of 7 April 1861. here are Joseph Gordon and his wife Mary. They were hard to find (I've been looking for years) as their name has been spelled wrongly as Gording or Gooding.
How do we know that they are Gordons and not Goodings? Because there is a registry of birth for a Samuel Gordon at 11 Plough Alley in April 1855 (6 years earlier) to a Joseph Gordon. It seems highly unlikely that a Joseph and Samuel Gordon move out of a house, only for a Joseph and Samuel Gooding (off the same age) to move in.

Here, on the night of 2 April 1871, I hope, is Samuel Gordon and a sister Hanna. The age is correct, and it correctly it says he was born in Wapping - although unusually it gives an address of his birthplace as 11 Gt. Hermitage St., Wapping.

Here, on the night of 3 April 1881, are Samuel Gordon and Janet Gordon living in Marchmont Street where he had a fish and game shop. Interestingly his next door neighbour had a book keeper called Eugenie Chinnock, so their daughter Eugenie may not have been given a family name...
