James Balfour was the brother of [[David Balfour]] and [[Isabella Balfour]]. He was the son of [[John Balfour]] and [[Helen Smith]].

James was a baker, as his son also became when he moved to London.

He was born on the 15th May 1811 in Torryburn.

He married Anne Purvie (nee Brimer).

He died in Low Torry, Torryburn on November the 7th, 1890 (at 8 a.m.). The registry entry for his death lists his age as 79, and his occupation as a retired baker. His parents are given as John Balfour (Labourer, deceased) and his mother as Helen Balfour (nee Smith, deceased). The informant was James Brimer (father-in-law).He was married to Anne Purvie (nee Brimer).

Next to Mary Paterson's grave in Torryburn churchyard (his brother David Balfour's first wife) is another with the following inscription:

Erected by James Balfour to the memory of

his wif Mary Richie died Decr 7th 1849(?)
