Children

William and Eliza had the following children:

  • Ann Randall, born ~ 1840 in Brighton, Sussex.
  • William Randall, born ~ 1842, c. 10 Jul 1842 Kirdford (father labourer)
  • Eliza Randall, born ~ 1846 (Kirdford) c. 4 Oct 1846 Kirdford (father labourer)
  • Henry Randall, born ~ 1849, c. 16 Dec 1849 Kirdford (father labourer)
  • James Randall, b. 26 Feb 1852 Kirdford, c. 4 Apr 1852 Kirdford
  • Mary Randall, born ~ 1857 (Kirdford)

In 1841 he was an agricultural labourer living at Rickman Lane, Hamlet, Kirdford with his wife Eliza and daughter Ann.

Five entries later in the census, there is another William Randall at "Streeters", Kirdford who is older (~45) living with a Ruth Randall (~50), James (~20), Charles (12) and Eliza (10). This could be his father, but many items don't match such as the wife being Ruth (not Mary) and a son called James of that age.

In 1851 he was living at Kirdford, Sussex

His wife Eliza died from brain fever on the 22nd January 1858, she was only 36 years old.

In 1861 he was 44 and a widower, living with three of his children, Eliza (15), James (9) and Mary (4).

In 1871 he was living at Bridgefoot Cottages, Kirdford, Sussex, along with his son James Randall and a servant called Ann Durrant. The census lists his age as 54, and unusually his place of birth is listed as Wisborough Green, Sussex (instead of the usual Alford). He was an agricultural labourer.

Ann Durant was a widow, and had been living next door to William in the 1861 census.

In 1881 he was living at No. 1, Bridgefoot Cottages (probably the same cottage as in 1871). Ann Durant is no longer with him, instead the only other person in the house is a domestic servant, Eliza Clare (44). He is an agricultural labourer & carter.

In 1891 William is 75 and living at 1 Round St Common, Wisborough Green (modern postcode RH14 0AN), with his daughter, now Ann Gumbrell, who is widowed, and her children. He is a retired labourer. Next door is the Fox and Houses inn.

Death

William died on the 10th January 1898 at Kirdford. He was 82 years old, and a farm labourer. He died of senile decay, and his death was registered by his son-in-law Alfred Alying, who was present at his death in Kirdford.
