Birth

William Joseph Churm was born on the 22nd of June 1859 in Manchester. His parents were Richard Churm and Eliza Maria O'Reilly. He was probably born at 17 New York Street, Chorlton On Medlock, Manchester, as he was recorded there at the age of 1 by the 1861 census.

By the 1871 census William (Willie J.) was a scholar and the family had moved to 40 Clifford Street, Chorlton On Medlock.

He was 21 for the 1881 census when he was a clerk in the cotton industry (his father was a cotton merchant) and he still lived with his widowed father at 62 Ducie Grove, Chorlton On Medlock.


Marriage

On the 14th September 1887 he married Annie Stoppard.

Children

They had 6 children:

  • Richard Oscar Churm (2nd July 1889, bapt. 1 Sep 1889, St. Saviours, Manchester. Abode: 24 Alexandra Grove, died 5th Sept 1967)
  • William Stanley Churm (7th Feb 1891, bapt. 23 Sep 1891, St. Chrysostom's, Adobe: 24 Alexandra Grove C on M, died 11th September 1894)
  • Ethel Handforth Churm (19th September 1892)
  • Victoria Ida Churm
  • Jessie Louisa Churm
  • Winifred Annie Churm.

From the Manchester Evening News, 20th September 1892:

BIRTHS MARRIAGES, AND DEATHS
CHURM.- On the 19th inst., at 24, Alexandra Grove, Chorlton-on-Medlock, the wife of W.J. Churm, of a daughter.

From the Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser, 13th September 1894:

DEATHS
CHURM.- On the 11th inst., William Stanley, younger son of W.J.Churm, Kenworthy House, Northenden, in his fourth year.


By 1891 he has his own house at 24 Alexandra Grove, Chorlton-on-Medlock where he lived with Annie and their first two children, Richard (1 year old) and newborn William.

By 1901 the family has moved to 65 Palatine Road, Northenden, Manchester, Cheshire.

On the 19th June 1921 he is 62 and living with his family, now at 2 Clevelands, Charlton Drive, Sale, Cheshire, which is just outside Manchester. He is an employer as a provisions dealer at a business called "M. Handforth, Provision Merchant", at 9 Shudehill, Manchester.

Death

He died in 1937, aged 77 years.
