William Carter was the father of William John Carter, beyond that he is hard to track as he listed a different birthplace and age in each census:
- ~1814 in Buckinghamshire
- ~1812 in Linslett, Buckinghamshire (probably Linslade).
- ~1807 in Stockley, Buckinghamshire (probably Stewkley).
- ~1808 in Stockley, Buckinghamshire (probably Stewkley).
On the night of 6 June 1841 our William Carter was 20 years old and living with his first wife Sarah Carter.
Their daughter was named here as Celano, in the next census as Rener. It seems her actual name was Serena.
On the night of 30 March 1851 our William Carter was living with his wife Caroline Carter (nee Clout) in Burwash, Sussex. They had been married about 4 years, and had three children, all of whom were older than 4 years.
Two of their children are listed as having been born at Wingleys, Buckinghamshire. There doesn't seem to be such a place. North-west of Stewkley is Winslow, and South-east is Wing. Either are good candidates.
His daughter is named in the census as Rener, but in fact her name is likely to have been Serena
On the night of the 7th April 1861 he was 49, a brick maker (from Linslett), living with his wife Caroline who was 37, from Brenchley in Kent, and his son Joseph (19).
On the night of 2nd April 1871 he was 64 and living with his wife Caroline (47) and their 9 year old son William at Brickyard Cottage in Kennington, Kent.
On the night of 3rd April 1881 he was still living with his wife Caroline and their son William (19), but the house is not named. They are two doors away from Grocer's shop, Kennington St.

It looks like William married twice.
With his first wife he had the following children:

- Sarah Carter, Wingleys, Buckinghamshire, ~1840.
- Joseph Carter, Wingleys, Buckinghamshire, ~1842.
William Carter married Caroline Clout in Brenchley, Kent on the 8th November 1847.
As far as I can tell they only had one child together, William John Carter.
