William Butcher was baptised on the 2nd November 1845 at Kingsnorth, Kent. His father was James Butcher, a farmer, and his mother was Eliza Prebble. The 1851 census lists his birth place as Mersham, but Kingsnorth is on the outskirts of Ashford, and neighbours Mersham. In addition one of his sisters was recorded as being born in Mersham.

On the night of 30 March 1851 William Butcher was living with his parents James and Eliza at Hay Cross, Woodchurch, Canterbury, Kent .

It's unclear where he was in the 1861 & 1871 censuses. One William Butcher was indentured at Faversham, Kent to a ship - the Bethesda, run by George Baker of Whitstable, .
