William's birth certificate says that he was born on the 5th July 1845 at Clayton. His father was William Allfrey and his mother was Audry Vincent. His father was a bricklayer. His birth was registered by his mother on the Twentieth of July 1845.
In 1851 he was 5 years old and living with his widowed father at the house of his grandparents Thomas Allfrey and Catherine Allfrey in Keymer in Sussex.
In 1861 he was 15 years old, and living in West Street, Clayton in Sussex with his father and his step-mother Sarah (born circa 1832 in Chorley, Sussex). William was a brick labourer (his father was a brick layer).
On the 3rd October 1864 he married Charlotte Sarah Nash in Brighton, Sussex.
