Born: 6 Dec 1807 Died: 21 Oct 1879 Married: Charles Simmonds Mother: Elizabeth Burgoine Father: Robert Chettleburgh Descendant: William Chettleburgh
Census 1841 1851 1861 1871 1881 1891 1901 1911 1921

Sarah Chettleburgh was the unmarried mother of William Chettleburgh.

William's uncle was also called William, and he lived with her son William after he retired (according to the 1881 and 1891 censuses). So William the elder was her brother (rather than brother-in-law).

There is a record of a Sarah Chettleburgh (spouse unknown) christening a William Chettleburgh on the 3rd December 1837 in Saint John De Sepulchre (which was next to Lakenham).

Birth

Sarah was born in Lakenham on the 6th December 1807 to Robert Chettleburgh and Elizabeth Burgoine according to the Lakenham parish registers. She was the second Sarah born to those parents - the first was born on the 10th August 1806, but died the next month (30th September 1806).

The parish registers said "Baptisms 1807 ... Chettleburgh Sarah dt. of Rob.t. & Eliz.th. born &(?) bap.d. 6th Dec.r."

She had a brother, Robert Burgoyne Chettleburgh, born on the 5th June 1809 (in Lakenham).

The same parents also had a son (our Uncle at The Cricketer's Arms) called William on the 22nd March 1812, again in Lakenham. And again this was their second William, the first was born on the 24th March 1811.

Children

Sarah was a servant at this time (at an unknown household) and appears to have only had the one child, born to an unknown father:

  • William Chettleburgh, born 30 November 1837

William Chettleburgh was born on the 30 November 1837, and subsequently christened on the 3 December 1837 in Saint John De Sepulchre, Norwich to a Sarah Chettleburgh (of this parish, a servant), his father unknown ("illegitimate son of").

Saint John De Sepulchre isn't quite Lakenham as such, although it is on the correct side (South) of Norwich to Lakenham. The streets that it would cover today are around Ber Street (Surrey Street, Mariners Lane, Horn's Lane, Lily Terrace, Foulgar's opening, Thorn Lane, Roen road, Finkelgate) extending to the city walls.

In 1841 she is living in Old Lakenham (two entries away from the Mill) with her mother Elizabeth, her sister Mary, and her son William who is 3. Her occupation is given as "Wool".

Later on she remarries and gains a step-son, George Simmons.

Marriage

It appears that Sarah was not married when William was born in 1837, but later married a Charles Simmons on the 15th August 1847 (her father was given as Robert Chettleburgh, occupation "glover"). Unlike Charles, Sarah was capable of writing her own name.

In 1851 they are living together at Lakenham Road, Norwich. Two sons are listed, George Simmons (20) was a son from Charles' previous marriage to Elizabeth Ribbon, the other is listed as William Simmons (well "Do.") who is the correct age (13) to be our William Chettleburgh. Quite possibly when the census taker asked the relationship and the answer was "son" then they just assumed it was Simmons instead of Chettleburgh.

In 1861 Sarah Simmonds is living in Kensington Road, Lakenham, next to the "Kensington Gardens Public House", her husband Charles was working as a night watchman at the Yarn Mills that night (just down the road, and closer to where William was living.

In 1871 she was living on Lakenham Road in Old Lakenham, next door to The Cock Public House with her husband Charles.

Death

Her husband Charles died and was buried in Lakenham in October 1873, he was 64 years old.

Six years later, Sarah Simmons was buried at Lakenham on the 21st October 1879, she was 71 years old.

Other (unrelated?) reports:

There is a record of a Sarah Chettleburgh Christened on 9th November 1823, in Saint Clement, Norwich, Norfolk. However this is probably a different Sarah as 14 is a bit young for having a child.

There is a Sarah Chettleburgh in Spitalfields, Thorpe Next Norwich in 1851 (she was 33 and born in Catton, Norwich, Norfolk) who is an unmarried Dress Maker, the head of the household with a daughter called Esther A. Chettleburgh, and a nephew called James (both children born in Thorpe Hamlet, Norfolk).

A William Chittleburgh married a Frances Cooper on the 4th November 1806 in Topcroft, Norfolk (IGI). Now we have records (1851 census) of another Frances Chittle

A Sarah Chittleburgh was born in Woodton in 20th March 1831 to John and Elizabeth Chittleburgh.

  • A Sarah Chettleburgh was married in Norwich in 1847 to either (Benjamin Culley, James Peart, Charles Simmonds or Martin Smith).
  • A Sarah Chettleburgh was married in Topcroft to a John Gardiner (father was a Robert Chettleburgh).
  • A Sarah Chettleburgh was married in Norwich to a Charles Simmons on 15/08/1847 (father was a Robert Chettleburgh).
