Born: ~1771 Died: 15 Apr 1822 Married: Elizabeth Burgoine Mother: Tabitha Trower Father: William Chettleburgh Descendant: Sarah Chettleburgh

Birth

Robert Chettleburgh was baptised in Arminghall, near Caister St Edmund (a village just South of Lakenham) around on the 18th May 1788, but may have been born much earlier as the baptism mentions that he was 17 at the time, which would put his year of birth at around 1771 (the same as his future wife).

His parents were William Chettleburgh and Tabitha Trower.

One Robert Chettleburgh was listed in the electoral register as living at St Peter of Mancroft, Norwich in 1797, he was listed as a haberdasher. He was also listed in St Peter Mancroft in 1799 in the tax assessment (his assessed value was 10s).

Marriage

Robert married Elizabeth Burgoine in Lakenham on 18th February 1806.

Robert Chettleburgh of this Parish Bachelor and Elizabeth Burgoyne of the same, Spinster Married in this Church by Banns this seventeenth day of February in the Year One Thousand eight Hundred and six by me Charles Millard Vicar. This Marriage was solemnised between US The Mark X of Robert Chettleburgh and The mark X of Eliz Burgoyne In the presence of The mark X off Charles Root & Jon? Burgoine.

Banns were read out on the 12th, 19th, and 26th of January 1806.

Children

They had six children in Lakenham, two who died in infancy:

  • Sarah Chettleburgh, born 10th August 1806, buried 30th September 1806
  • Sarah Chettleburgh (mother of William Chettleburgh) born 6th December 1807
  • Robert Burgoyne Chettleburgh, born 5th June 1809
  • William Chettleburgh, born 24th March 1811 (presumably died soon after)
  • William Chettleburgh (Uncle to William Chettleburgh), born 22nd March 1812
  • Mary Chettleburgh, baptised 13th Oct 1816 at Lakenham, married James Jeffrey in 1845, remarried to James Clarke on 21st December 1856.

In 1816, in the baptism record for his daughter Mary, he was listed as a Breeches Maker

Death

Robert Chettleburgh died on the 15th April 1822, and was buried on the 19th April 1822 at Lakenham St John and All Saints. He was 51 years old.

From the Bury and Norwich Post', 24th April 1822:

Monday se'nnight, ...
Same day, after a few minutes' illness, Mr. Robert Chettleburgh, glover, of Lakenham, aged 51 (which would put his date of birth around 1771).

Supporting evidence that this is the right entry:

  • Robert died sometime before the 1851 census where his wife Elizabeth was listed as being widowed.
  • He also wasn't living with then in the 1841 census either (although the 1841 census doesn't list marital status, so it is possible he was away).
  • The burial was in Lakenham (where his wife continued to live)
  • The age given in the burial record (51) matches his estimated date of birth (1771 - given he was 17 when baptised in 1888).
  • The obituary mentions him being a "glover", and we know he was a glover from the marriages of both Sarah and Mary Chettleburgh (see below).

Post death

From the Norwich Mercury, 12th February 1825:

A Case of Real Distress
It is so common to hear all Appeals to the Bene-
volent and Charitable with "A Case of Real
Distress," that under some circumstances it might
fail to produce the desired effect, but the Situation of
the WIDOW and FOUR CHILDREN of the late
MR. ROBERT CHETTLEBURGH, a man of strict
integrity, well deserves to be so termed.- He had, by
care and industry, acquired a handsome competency,
but forming a most unfortunate connection in busi-
ness he lost the whole of his property, his life perhaps
was shortened by mental suffering, and his Widow
and Family left completely destitute.- An Appeal
under such circumstances to the affluent Charitable
of Norfolk and Norwich, has hitherto never been
made in vain.

In 1845 at the marriage of his daughter Mary (spinster) to James Jeffrey (widower and wool comber) he was recorded as her father. The married couple's addresses were given as St Julian (this parish). Robert's occupation was listed as "glover", which is odd as I would have assumed they would have written deceased if (as assumed) he died in 1822. But then again I can't see deceased being written for anyone else in this register either. The two witnesses were Robert Chettleburgh and Sarah Chettleburgh (I assume his son and daughter - the siblings of the bride).

In 1847 at the marriage of his daughter Sarah Chettleburgh to Charles Simmonds, he was recorded as her father and also listed as a "glover" (again despite being deceased).
