Birth
Martha Handforth was worn in around 1830-1831 in Cheadle, Cheshire (or Wilmslow according to the 1891 census).
Her parents were John Handforth and Elizabeth Handforth.
In 1841 she was 11 and living with her parents at Wilmslow Mills, Wilmslow, Cheshire.
In 1851 she was the head of the household at 1 Gollings Buildings, Newton, Manchester. She was a Grocer and Provision Dealer. Children
In 1862 they were living at 124 Oxford road, and David was a Provision Dealer.
Their children were:
- Henry David Stoppard (b.23 June 1862, 124 Oxford Road, c.23 July 1862, St Saviour, Manchester, Lancashire)
- Annie Elizabeth Stoppard (b.27th August 1863, Oxford Street, Chorlton upon Medlock, c.23 Sep 1863, St. Saviour's, Manchester, Lancashire).
- Martha Louisa Stoppard (b.1 July 1866, 4 New York St, Chorlton upon Medlock. c. 26 Sep 1866, St Saviour, Manchester, Lancashire)
By 1871 they had moved to 134 Wilmslow Road in Withington, where (apart from Henry and Annie) they had three other people in the house:
- Mary Sandiford (visitor) a 70 year old widow, allegedly born in Bramley Moor in Sheffield, Yorkshire
- Hannah M. Bradshaw an unmarried 36 year old born in Sheffield, Yorkshire.
- John Doherty a 15 year old errand boy born in Particroft, Lancashire.
Come 1881, the family had moved to Stockport Road, Cheadle, Cheshire, which was Martha's original hometown. David was a Shopkeeper/Grocer and their children Henry and Annie were still at home, probably working for their father (both being Grocer's Assistants). A William Locket was visiting from Manchester (the birthplace of Henry and Annie) and they had an Irish domestic servant (Jane Guilfoyle).
By 1891 Martha was head of the household at 417 Oxford Street, in Chorlton on Medlock, and was a provision dealer.

A different Martha Handforth (26, father John Handforth, farmer) married a James Atherton in 1861 (birth ~1835) in Manchester. We have to be careful to make sure we don't pick her pre-marriage as our Martha.
