John Balfour was born and baptised on the 6th June 1779 in Torryburn. His parents were Robert Balfour and Helen Nichol.

He married Helen Smith on the 26th October 1805 in Torryburn:

Children

They had three children that we know of:

  • John Balfour born 24th April 1808, baptised 8th May 1808, in Torryburn.
  • James Balfour born or baptised on the 15th May 1811 in Torryburn
  • David Balfour born on the 1st June 1817, and baptised on the 15th June 1817 in Torryburn


Death

He was a seaman, and died on January 25th, 1837 according to his gravestone in the churchyard at Torryburn church:

His gravestone is next to that of his son David Balfour's first wife, Mary Paterson who died twelve years later.

According to the parochial registers he died on the 23rd January 1837 and was buried on the 28th January 1837. His wife was Helen Smith, and he was 57 years old when he died.

Box SC21/23/11 of Dunfermline Sheriff Court gives a list of West Fife Jurors for the year 1851, and the listing also gives their date of birth or age, which is useful in tracing their descent. They were either Special Jurors - who held heritable property of annual rent of £100 or personal property of £1000 or Common Jurors, possessors of heritable property of the yearly value of £5, or personal property of £200.
