John Balfour was born and baptised on the 6th June 1779 in Torryburn. His parents were Robert Balfour and Helen Nichol.

They had three children that we know of:
- John Balfour born 24th April 1808, baptised 8th May 1808, in Torryburn.
- James Balfour born or baptised on the 15th May 1811 in Torryburn
- David Balfour born on the 1st June 1817, and baptised on the 15th June 1817 in Torryburn
Death
He was a seaman, and died on January 25th, 1837 according to his gravestone in the churchyard at Torryburn church:
1838 Erected by Helen Smith In Memory Of John Balfour Her husband who died Jany 25, 1837 aged 57 years
His gravestone is next to that of his son David Balfour's first wife, Mary Paterson who died twelve years later.
