James Balfour was the brother of David Balfour and Isabella Balfour. He was the son of John Balfour and Helen Smith.
James was a baker, as his son also became when he moved to London.

He died in Low Torry, Torryburn on November the 7th, 1890 (at 8 a.m.). The registry entry for his death lists his age as 79, and his occupation as a retired baker. His parents are given as John Balfour (Labourer, deceased) and his mother as Helen Balfour (nee Smith, deceased). The informant was James Brimer (father-in-law).He was married to Anne Purvie (nee Brimer).
Next to Mary Paterson's grave in Torryburn churchyard (his brother David Balfour's first wife) is another with the following inscription:
