1841 - Torry & New Mills Pans - John and Helen Hunter

John and Helen Hunter were the parents of Janet Hunter who later went on to marry David Balfour. Remember that the ages in the 1841 census were rounded down to 5 years.

On the night of 6 June 1841, Janet Hunter was living with her first husband at Torry & New Mills.

1851 - Torry Village, Parish of Torryburn - John Hunter & Helen Anderson

On the night of 30 March 1851, John and Helen Hunter are living in Torry Village. In the same building (but separate household) is their daughter Janet Balfour. Their son-in lawDavid Balfour married his first wife Mary Patterson in 1844, but she died in 1849, and by 1851 he has married Janet. Janet's three children by her first marriage are listed as Pattersons, and they are David's stepchildren, so he is not the father.

1861 - Low Torry, Torryburn, Fifeshire - John Hunter & Helen Anderson

On the night of 7 April 1861 here are John & Helen Hunter, living at Low Torry. They are a separate household, but living in the same building as their recently widowed son-in-law David Balfour who was the father of Janet Hunter Balfour (who married Samuel Gordon). Her mother Janet Hunter, David's second wife has died at this time. Note (not transcribed) that he has 3 rooms with more than one window.
