According to the 1851, census of Torryburn, Helen Hunter (nee Anderson) was 70 years old, which would put her birth at around 1781. She lived with her husband John Hunter, an agricultural labourer in Torry & New Mills Pans.
Birth
A Helen Anderson was born to parents Robert Anderson and Helen Robertson in Torryburn on the 29th September 1780 (according to the parish registers).
Marriage
She married John Hunter.
Children
They had the following children:
- Janet Hunter, born 26th July 1812 in Torryburn, Fife, Scotland.
On the night of 6 June 1841, John and Helen Hunter were living at Torry & New Mills Pans.
On the night of 30 March 1851, John and Helen Hunter are living in Torry Village. In the same building (but separate household) is their daughter Janet Balfour. Their son-in law, David Balfour married his first wife Mary Patterson in 1844, but she died in 1849, and by 1851 he has married Janet. Janet's three children by her first marriage are listed as Pattersons, and they are David's stepchildren, so he is not the father.
On the night of 7 April 1861 then John & Helen Hunter are living at Low Torry. They are a separate household, but living in the same building as their recently widowed son-in-law David Balfour who was the father of Janet Hunter Balfour (who married Samuel Gordon). Their daughter Janet Hunter, David's second wife has died at this time, possibly as a result of complications of childbirth.
Death
Ellen Hunter died on the 10th September 1872 at Low Torry, Torryburn.
The registration stated that her husband was John Hunter (common labourer). It also stated that her parents were Robert Anderson and Ellen Robertson.
