Children

Harriet and James had the following children:

In 1881 Harriet was 33 and living at 7 Sussex Terraces, Brighton (Sussex) with her husband James (31) and her daughter Catherine E. Randall (7). James was a police constable.

By 1891 they had moved to 38 Albion Hill in Brighton. Harriet was 43 and her husband James was 39, and still a police constable. Their daughter Catherine was 17 and working in a factory. They also had a boarder (Herbert Upperton, who was a 13 year old baker's assistant)

By 1901 her husband James was 51 and had retired, and Harriet (54) was living with him in Rose Cottage, Staplefield Common, Handcross (part of), Cuckfield, Sussex.

In 1911 James (60) is an Innkeeper at the St George Thomas's Inn in Slindon (Sussex), and Harriet (64) is assisting him in the business. Their granddaughter Mabel Richardson is living with them. According to this census they only had one child (and given that Harriet is 64, it is unlikely they would have had any more).

Her husband James Randall died on the 1st November 1915, leaving everything to her. At the time of his death he was still the licensed victualler of the Sir George Thomas's Arms, Slindon.

From the probate:

RANDALL James of Sir George Thomas's Arms Slindon
Common Sussex licensed victualler died 1 November 1915
Administration Chichester 2 December to Harriett Randall
widow. Effects £248 8s. 8d.

Death

Harriett Randall died on the Third December 1925 at 250 Elm Grove, Brighton at the age of 78. Her cause of death was senility.

She was of 4 Windmill Street, Brighton, and the widow of James Randall, Police Constable.

Her death was registered on the 4th December 1925 by C. E. Richardson, daughter, of 4 Windmill Street, Brighton.

Other Records

On 28th February 1897 a George Randall is baptised in Loxwood, Sussex. The parents are James Randall (Carpenter) and Harriett Randall. This seems very strange, but there is a comment which looks like "Adult" and born 8th July 1877. If this is our James and Harriett then this contradicts the 1911 census which says they only had one child.

A Harriet Upperton was born in Northchapel in Sussex in around 1848.

Poem about the Sir George Thomas Arms in Slindon

(found at http://www.slindon.com/Facilities/Poem.htm)

This poem was written about 'The Spur' pub (also known as the 'Sir George Thomas Arms') during the first world war.

There's a quaint old inn on the spur of a hill,
In a fair sunny place that I love.
Where the cool summer breeze comes through whispering trees,
And the lark's sweet song from above.
I love the old fashioned windows with the nooks and crannies and beams.
How oft here I have quaffed the good foaming Ale and indulged in pleasant day dreams.
How cheery the Host with the smile and the toast.
How lovely the good lady seems.
The fast setting sun, his days race almost run, would shed through the window his beams.
Sweet Slindon in Sussex, the spot nearest me,
Quaint Inn with the old fashioned charms.
Where 'ere I roam I'll be thinking of home,
And my friends of 'Sir George Thomas Arms'.
