This page details all census entries we have found relating to the Francis family.

These are transcribed as is (no extra information added) apart from "dittos" being expanded.

The dates of the census were:

  • 1841 was the night of 6 June 1841.
  • 1851 was the night of 30 March 1851.
  • 1861 was the night of 7 April 1861.
  • 1871 was the night of 2 April 1871.
  • 1881 was the night of 3 April 1881 .
  • 1891 was the night of 5 April 1891.
  • 1901 was the night of 31 March 1901.
  • 1911 was the night of 2 April 1911.
  • 1921 was the night of 19 June 1921.

1921 - Hatton Hall, Wellingborough, Northampton

On the night of the 19th June 1921, Geoff Carrington was an inmate at Hatton's Hall, Wellingborough, Northampton.

1921 - Hatton Hall, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, England
Name Relation Orphanhood Age Profession Birth Place
Geoffrey James Carrington Inmate of home both dead 10y 7m Whole time (education) Brook, Norfolk

1911 - Kensington Place

On the night of 2 April 1911, Phoebe Carrington (nee Smith) is living at 15 Kensington Place or Row (it was listed as both), Queens Road, Lakenham. We know it is Phoebe, despite it only saying Mrs Carrington, as she has signed the census declaration as Mrs P. Carrington, and her daughter Gertrude is still living with her.

The house has 4 rooms (including any kitchen, but not any bathrooms).

Phoebe is listed as having had 9 children, 2 of whom have subsequently died, and she lists how long her marriage a having lasted as 46 years (whether that includes years since her husband died is not clear). For Gertrude she had 3 children, 1 of whom has died, and her marriage is 3 years.

1911 - 15 Kensington Row, Queen's Road, Lakenham, Norwich

The census comments that Phoebe has only one child born (Hilda).

1901 - Blackburn

1901 - The Ship Inn, 151 Penny? Street, Blackburn (next to Victoria Street)
Name Relation Status Age Profession Birth Place
James Carrington Head M 33 Beer Seller Norwich, Norfolk
Ellen Carrington Wife M 45 - Blackburn, Lancashire

Well we can see from the above where James probably was in 1891, ie in Blackburn, although we will need the census for the whole country for 1891 to prove this.

1901 - Kensington Road

1901 - 16 Kensington Row, Lakenham, Norwich
Name Relation Status Age Profession Birth Place
Phoebe Carrington Head W 57 - Norwich, Norfolk
Gertie Carrington Daughter S 21 Cardboard Box Maker Norwich, Norfolk

James' father Henry has obviously died since 1891, and all the children appear to have left apart from Gertrude. But wait, who else is living in this street:

1901 - 11 Kensington Row, Lakenham, Norwich
Name Relation Status Age Profession Birth Place
Henry Carrington Head M 37 Stone Dresser Starch Miller Norwich, Norfolk
Emma Carrington Wife M 35 - Forncett, Norfolk
Emma L Carrington Daughter S 9 Scholar Forncett, Norfolk

Dorothy F? Carrington Daughter - 4 - Forncett, Norfolk
Gladys M Carrington Daughter - 1mo - Forncett, Norfolk
Thomas G Bunting Boarder S 28 Stone Dresser Starch Miller Fundenhall, Norfolk

Now Henry Carrington was married in 1891 in Norwich, Norfolk, to Emma Bunting. And if that wasn't enough, who lives next to Henry?

1901 - 12 Kensington Row, Lakenham, Norwich
Name Relation Status Age Profession Birth Place
Frederick W Bunting Head M 31 Stone Man Starch Miller Fundenhall, Norfolk
Eliza Bunting Wife M 22 - Norwich, Norfolk

Now, Frederick, and Eliza were witnesses at James' wedding in 1909, and Eliza was a witness with Phoebe on the amendments to James' birth certificate. She is also suspiciously the right age to be... dum, dum, Daaa! ...

Eliza Carrington, James' (and Henry's) sister. Note also that Fundenhall and Forncett are next to each other (south west of Norwich), which must mean something, but I'm not sure what yet...

1891 Foulger Opening, Norwich

1891 - 6 Foulger Opening, Norwich (St John de Sepulchre)

Mary Ann Carrington Daughter S 15 Dress Maker Norwich, Norfolk
Eliza Carrington Daughter S 12 Domestic General Norwich, Norfolk
Gertrude Carrington Daughter - 10 Scholar Norwich, Norfolk
George Smith Boarder S 33? Starch Miller Norwich, Norfolk

So from the above census entry we are missing the all important James Carrington, so where was he on the evening of 5th April 1891?

Well, to check we have the right families we have to go back to 1881:

William Carrington Son - 10 Scholar Norwich, Norfolk
Mary Carrington Daughter - 5 Scholar Norwich, Norfolk
Eliza Carrington Daughter - 2 - Norwich, Norfolk
Gertrude Carrington Daughter - 2m - Norwich, Norfolk
William Smith Lodger U 23 Mustard Miller Norwich, Norfolk

Finally we have tracked down James Carrington living with his parents, but who are his grandparents? To find this out we have to go back 30 years to the 1851 census of Litcham (named as his birthplace).

1871 - Holls Brewery Lane, Lakenham, Norwich

1871 - Holls Brewery Lane, Norwich (St. Mark)
Name Relation Status Age Profession Birth Place
Henry Carrington Head M 26 Labourer East Lexham, Norfolk
Phobe Carrington Wife M 25 Norwich, Norfolk
Henry Carrington Son - 7 Scholar Norwich, Norfolk
Frederic Carrington Son 5 Norwich, Norfolk
James Carrington Son 3 Norwich, Norfolk
William Carrington Boarder 66 Gardener Holkham, Norfolk

In 1871 Mary Carrington was a patient at the Infirmary Road Borough Asylum, St Clement, Norwich. She was 65, born in Wells, Norfolk, and the wife of a gardener. Her condition was listed as lunatic (which probably covered a wide range of conditions including dementia). There was also a William Carrington, but he was 22, an unmarried Tailor.

1861 - Trory St, Lakenham, Norwich

The address of the house two entries before in the census was given as 35 Trory Street, and all the houses below were labelled as ditto, but I think this just referred to the street, not the number.

Trory Street no longer exists (it was south of the old Victoria Railway Station), but it used to come off Grove Road, which still exists.

1861 - Trory St., Mancroft, Lakenham, Norwich, Norfolk
Name Relation Status Age Profession Birth Place
William Carrington Head Married 56 Gardener Holkham, Norfolk
Mary Carrington Wife Married 55 Wells, Norfolk
James Carrington Son Unmarried 19 Bricklayer Wroxham, Norfolk
Henry Carrington Son 16 Gardener East Lexham, Norfolk
John Carrington Son 14 Brace Weaver East Lexham, Norfolk
Frederic Carrington Son - 12 Scholar East Lexham, Norfolk

1851 - Litcham, Norfolk

1851 - Litcham Mitford, Norfolk (PRO HO/107/1825 Folio: 327 Page:28)
Name Relation Status Age Profession Birth Place
William Carrington Head M 46 Gardener Holkham, Norfolk
Mary Carrington Wife - 45 - Wells, Norfolk
William Carrington Son - 12 Scholar Wroxham, Norfolk
James Carrington Son - 9 Scholar Wroxham, Norfolk
Henry Carrington Son - 6 Scholar Litcham, Norfolk
John Carrington Son - 4 At Home Litcham, Norfolk
Frederick Carrington Son - 2 At Home Litcham, Norfolk

Success! But 12 seems a bit young for an eldest child (Mary would have been 33), so a long search (note the misspelled birth place) turns up:

1851 - Lexham Road, Litcham Mitford, Norfolk (PRO HO/107/1825 Folio: 335 Page: 44)
Name Relation Status Age Profession Birth Place
Ellen Stanford Head U 53 Independant Massingham, Norfolk
Charlotte Stanford Niece U 11 Independant Tittleshall, Norfolk
Eliza Carrington Servant U 17 House Servant Wroyham, Norfolk

So we now have an elder daughter (no signs of any others yet) which would make Mary 28 at the birth of her first child - still a bit late, but not quite so unlikely).

1841 - Wroxham, Norfolk

Now we're doing so well, lets try 1841 (note the 1841 census ages for adults are rounded to 5 years.):

Here we have a household at Wroxham field with Mary Carrrington as the head. And next in the census is William Carrington alone at Wroxham Hall. It looks like he was away for the census. but they slipped him in close to his family.

Ok, so on to Wroxham in 1841, where William's family has moved to (note that these two entries are adjacent in the Census):

1841 - Wroxham Field, Wroxham, Norfolk (PRO HO/???/???? Folio: Page: )
Name Relation Status Age Profession Birth Place
Mary Carrington - - 35 Washwoman -
Elizabeth Carrington - - 14 - -
Maria Carrington - - 12 - -
Harriot Carrington - - 8 - -
Elizabeth Carrington - - 6 - -
Mary Carrington - - 2 - -
1841 - Wroxham Hall, Wroxham, Norfolk (PRO HO/???/???? Folio: Page: )
William Carrington - - 35 Gardener J. -

Bizarrely amoungst the children we have two Elizabeths, and a Mary and a Maria. Can this be the same family? The only possible match in the children is the second Elizabeth (give or take a year). Where did all the other children go (especially Mary the youngster). Also why is their son William (who should be 1 or 2 at this time) not listed?

Also in 1841 we have an Ellen Carrington listed in Holkham (I've only an incomplete transcription of this one):

1841 - Holkham, Norfolk (PRO HO/???/???? Folio: Page: )
Name Relation Status Age Profession Birth Place
Ellen Carrington - - 15 - -
William Sexton - - 40 Ag Lab -
Sarah Sexton - - 35 - -

William Sexton - - 10 - -
Harriet Sexton - - 9 - -
Sarah Sexton - - 8 - -
Susanna Sexton - - 4 - -
Benjamin Sexton - - - - -
William Green - - 40 - -

I'm not yet sure who Ellen is (William's family had moved to Wroxham by then), perhaps she was one of John Carrington's children, as the 1841 census shows he too is living in Holkham

1841 - Holkham, Norfolk (PRO HO/???/???? Folio: Page: )
